“If you pay peanuts you get monkeys!!!” Why businesses need to invest in the web not ‘get away with it’.
Having recently started building and co-running a web services company, cjb-interactive, there has been one consistent occurrence which has blemished my love and passion for designing, building and particularly marketing websites. That is many managers poor perception of the web and a general refusal to invest anything more than peanuts into it.
I do agree that the web is a specialist subject just as distribution, accounts or sales, yet managers seem to understand in order to distribute products or increase sales a significant investment is needed. For the web on the other hand managers seem to not be interested if the investment overtakes their own weekly shopping bill!!
Let me explain where I am coming from, my business deals directly with small businesses. We design and build websites, yet have a flair and specialist interest in e-marketing. Using stats services we monitor in report form the increase in visitors, enquiries and eventually sales that our marketing develops for a business. In cases we have increased web enquiries by 400%, allowing a whole host of opportunities for businesses we have partnered with. Still finding and convincing new clients willing to pay more than an hour a month of an averagely paid workers salary proves ever difficult.
Let me summarize, pay a salesman for one hour a month and get no sales, pay a tele-sales person one hour a month and get no meetings, therefore pay a marketing strategy for your website only one hour a month and get nothing from it. It would perhaps lighten the scenario if businesses were not happy with this then we could simply explain what I have discussed previously, but the case is many managers invest poorly in the web and expect very little from it, happy with a few visitors a day most probably linking in from business directories trying to sell to them. Invest in the web and your business will grow, your enquiries will increase, and if your sales team are good so will your sales, pay peanuts and get monkeys.
